DECOMMISSION PHILEX TP3 AND JUSTLY COMPENSATE, REHABILITATE AFFECTED COMMUNITIES

BAGUIO CITY—In a media briefing today the Cordillera Peoples Alliance and Amianan Salakniban called for the immediate decommissioning of Philex’s Tailings Pond 3, and for rehabilitation and just compensation be urgently carried out for affected communities like Itogon, Tuba, and communities downstream of the Agno River, such as Pangasinan, which hosts the San Roque Dam.

We, lumad people residing in the communities of Brgy. Diatagon, Lianga, Surigao del Sur, through our organization MAPASU (Continuing Struggle for the Next Generation) STRONGLY OPPOSE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZING FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT (COPD) of the 29th IB, PA. Furthermore, WE STRONGLY CONDEMN THE VIOLATION OF THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE committed by the AFP under the command of Lt. Col. Henry A. Robinson, Jr., Battalion Commander of the 29th IBPA.

STOP MILITARIZATION OF ZAPANTA VALLEY! END COPD-OPLAN BAYANIHAN!

In August 30 of this year, residents of Ansili and Zapanta Valley became aware of military presence in their farms.

On the morning of August 31 more troops from the 30th IB PA arrived in the vicinity and gunshots were heard soon after. This compelled community members to evacuate and on September 1, residents including children and teachers, brought but a few of their belongings and walked for more than 9 kilometers and sought shelter in Brgy. Canaway and Brgy. Bangayan. On September 2, a truck filled with military men was seen passing Brgy. Bangayan going to Zapanta. Two helicopters were heard firing towards the mountain areas of Zapanta and Ansili. Until present time, military movements continue in said communities.

At least 106 residents of Ansili and Zapanta Valley of Brgy. Bangayan, Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte have been dislocated due to the ongoing military operations of the 402nd ID and 30th IB PA. 46 Mamanwa families and 60 families of peasant settlers left their community last September 1, 2011 and sought shelter in Brgy. Bangayan and Brgy. Canaway. Said residents were in evacuation just last May 26 to July 15, 2011 due to military operations and only returned when the military left their communities.

CPA & KATRIBU organize Joint Peace Consultation in Cordillera Day 2011 with GRP and NDFP

The Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) and KATRIBU have organized a joint peace consultation with representatives of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) on April 27, 2011, on the occasion of Cordillera Day 2011 in Lacub, Abra. The peace consultation is in light of the ongoing discussions on the Comprehensive Agreement on Socio-Economic Reform (CASER), where the rights and aspirations of indigenous peoples must be seriously considered and respected. Church leaders will preside and facilitate the joint consultation. The CASER is the second substantive agenda of the peace negotiations, the first being the respect of human rights and international humanitarian law; the third on constitutional and political reform; the fourth and last on the cessation of hostilities.

 

110 Families Flee as 23rd, 29th IB Combat Operations Intensify

April 2, 2011, Brgy. San Isidro, Marihatag, Surigao del Sur --- 110 families with about 600 men, women and children from hinterland communities fled their homes to safety in Brgy. San Isidro since March 31, 2011 when elements of the 29th IBPA intensified their combat operations against the New People's Army in the forest areas around their homes.
